2016 remastered reissue.
The Cocteaus fourth studio album was unmistakably them – Elizabeth Fraser’s vocal style is nigh on possible to mimic – but at the same time was a stark departure from the sound of it’s predecssor, Treasure, which in turn had a very different feel to that of Head Over Heels. Victorialand is more ambient in texture and tone, with Fraser still sounding like an angel, only this time one that had at last been purged of it’s fury. This change in approach had been forced upon them in part due to the temporary absence of bassist Simon Raymonde. That, and the fact that the music was almost completey devoid of rhythm, meant that on this release they sounded more ‘ethereal’ than ever.
